The name Beta-Barekeng reflects both mathematical meaning and local cultural identity. The term “Beta” refers to a mathematical symbol or Greek letter, while in the Ambonese language of Eastern Indonesia it also means “I” or “me.” The word “Barekeng” means “to count” or “counting.” Thus, Beta-Barekeng may be understood as “I Count.”
